Discrimination & Being Community: Stories We Need to Share

Being Community is an ongoing campaign platform by the Being Beings newsletter team to initiate various community projects that benefit the nation. The first project we are running on the BC platform is Stories We Need to Share, a campaign to get people surfacing their experiences of racial and religious discrimination.

A new initiative by Being Beings, Stories We Need to Share comprises of a series of online videos where participants share intimate stories about their experiences with racial and religious discrimination in Singapore, how it happens, and what we can do about it, both as individuals and as a community.

Singapore is known internationally for its racial and religious harmony. But despite this image, we know that racial and religious discrimination still exists in our society. Some of us have even been victims of this discrimination at our schools and workplaces. These stories of discrimination need to be shared, not to point fingers, but to start a constructive conversation about coming together and acknowledging these acts of discrimination. Before we can be agents of change, we first need to be agents of awareness.

Being Community: Stories we need to share is a project to deepen community awareness on such a sensitive topic. It comprises of a series of online videos where participants share intimate stories about their experiences with racial and religious discrimination in Singapore, how it happens, and what we can do about it, both as individuals and as a community, to build a more versatile diversity.

Each episode will be shared on Facebook and YouTube, and the public can post their reactions to the videos while also sharing their own stories of discrimination and what they have done to deal with this in their communities.

The videos, via social media, aim to encourage viewers to share their own stories as a way to raise awareness of these experiences and join in a wider conversation to build a more versatile diversity.

The public will also be invited to take part in 2 closed-door Zoom sessions – one on racial discrimination and one on religious discrimination – to carry on the conversation, tell their own stories of discrimination, and how it might be overcome.

The public can also take part in a pledge – share one thing they could pledge to do to combat reduce racial or religious discrimination in their own communities.

Being Community: Stories we need to share will culminate in a Facebook Live event, where invited panelists will talk about racial and religious discrimination in Singapore and how we as a society can work together to deal with discrimination.

We invite you to join the conversation at Being Community: Stories we need to share. Share your story, lend your voice, and take a stand against discrimination so that we can truly be, as our pledge says, one united people, regardless of race, language, or religion.
